10 Things To Remember When Buying A Watch
Buying a watch is an important decision. Many people prefer particular details in a watch. While a watch is most certainly a device that we need to know the time, there are many other things that are taken into consideration when buying a timepiece.
1. Lifestyle – One of the first things you must consider is what type of lifestyle you live and when you plan to wear your watch. If you are an outdoors type of person, your watch will likely be exposed to the elements. Therefore a sports watch should be considered. 2. Type – As you consider your lifestyle and how you want to use your watch, it is helpful to remember the various types of watches. The dress watch is one that most people buy. From the simple to the very elite, there is a wide variation of dress watches. The sports watch is also very popular. This watch is for people who spend more time outdoors or are involved in sports. These watches are generally more durable and have more features that appeal to people who need specific times for various activities.
3. Brand Name – Most people know that the brandname of a watch can make a big difference. Some brands are known for excellence. Other watches are consider more disposable because they are less expensive and won’t last as long. Find out what other people have preferred in watches they have purchased. 4. Case Materials – There are many types of materials of which the watch cases are made. Mechanical movement watches use a spring that must be wound regularly to keep the watch working. Automatic movement watches have mechanical movements that automatically wind by the wearing of it.
6. Bells and Whistles – Buying a watch used to be a relatively easy decision. That is because a watch was mostly for telling time. However, watches now have calendars, alarms, moon phases, and stop watches. Some people have specific things they want on their watches, so know what you are looking for and don’t make things too complicated.
7. Maintenance – How much time and money do you want to spend to take care of your watch? Manual and automatic mechanical watches should be cleaned and serviced every three years to keep them running smoothly and retain the value of the watch. When the battery of a quartz watch needs replaced, the watch should be serviced by a professional.
8. Watch Band – There are two types of watch bands – strap and bracelet. A link of metal pieces joined together is a bracelet band. Straps are made of rubber, nylon, fabric or leather. Some watches come with changeable bands to accommodate various colors. There are as many shapes and sizes of bands as one can imagine. You can find a watch band that appeals to your particular preference of style.
9. Warranty – Before taking any watch home, be sure and ask about a warranty. It is important to keep all receipts and make certain that you can return a watch that is found faulty. While we all make purchases in good faith, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
10. Cost – While the cost of a watch is important, it should not be the most important factor in your decision. However, a watch is an investment and an important accessory for everyday life. One can only assume that a cheap watch is not going to last very long or have excellent performance. While it is a good idea to set a limit, don’t sell yourself short by getting a watch just because it’s cheaper than another.
